The Fishing Hour

Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve, Somerset

Gallery: Somerset

4:44am, a time when most people are still fast asleep. In mid-summer it's the start of pre-dawn light and the time when wildlife starts to wake up. For me, on this occasion, it was time to be sat in a hide looking out over the flat waters of the nature reserve at Shapwick Heath. I could see Glastonbury Tor poking above the horizon in the far distance while ducks and swans floated in front of me, some still asleep. A pair of cormorants somehow balanced themselves perfectly on some convenient branches; they didn't wake up for another hour.
